Money leis has always been used to represent and symbolize good luck, wealth and prosperity. On some occasion, they could also be used to ward off evil spirits. Money garland leis are typically given during graduation, weddings and award ceremonies because they're considered to bring good luck. In the Philippines, the trend of giving garland money lei has became well-known very recently.
The custom of giving money lei during graduation has become popular only recently, but it looks like it's here to stay as it's a cool new idea to do for your loved ones or friends during this important ceremony. Remember that the typical custom is to give the money lei after the graduation ceremony.
The money garland lei popularized here in the Philippines during graduation season is made of satin ribbon. It composes of a necklace made of ribbon, and a rosette centerpiece made to look like a flower. The ribbon necklace then contains plastic pockets which can hold a single bank note. The amount of bills you put in a money ribbon lei depends on the number of pockets provided in the money lei. But of course, the total amount will depend on what kind of bill you'll put in the necklace. Some put ₱100 bills, but those who want to make it extra special would put ₱1,000 in it. Though the total amount doesn't really matter, it's the thought of wishing them good fortune that really counts.
Garland money leis are not just for graduation ceremonies, they can also be used on other events where a good and prosperous years ahead is welcomed. Wedding ceremonies and birthdays are also popular events where money leis can be given. Some other forms such as academic stole and sash are also used as alternative to the necklace-type leis.
